Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into pieces
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water
- 5 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Prepare the crust: In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in the butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water until dough comes together. Divide into two disks, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Peel, core, and slice apples. In a bowl, toss apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour.
- Roll out one dough disk on a floured surface into a 12-inch circle. Fit into a 9-inch pie dish. Fill with apple mixture.
- Roll out second dough disk and place over filling. Trim excess crust. Seal and crimp edges. Cut small slits on top for steam.
- In a small bowl, whisk egg with milk. Brush over crust for a golden finish.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, until crust is golden and filling bubbles. Cool before serving.
Notes
- You can replace Granny Smith apples with Honeycrisp for sweeter filling.
- Chill the dough for better flaky crusts.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.
